“I am son of a rich father, I could have spent my life in luxury in Europe and America, like many other wealthy Saudis. Instead I took up arms and headed for the mountains of Afghanistan. Was it personal interest that drove me to spend each moment of my life in the shadow of death? No! I was merely discharging a religious obligation by waging Jihad against those who attacked Muslims. These were the words of Osama bin Laden, which he spoke to me one morning during March 1997, in the cave of Tora Bora mountains of eastern Afghanistan. I was the first Pakistani journalist to interview Osama bin Laden. In May 1998, I encountered him for the second time in a hideout near the Kandahar Airport for many hours. He mentioned his possible death again and again to me in that long conversation and said: “Yes, I know that my enemy is very powerful but let me assure you, they can kill me but they cannot arrest me alive”. I received his messenger within a few hours after the 9/11 attacks and he praised all those who conducted these attacks but he never accepted the responsibility of the 9/11 attacks. It confused me. I tried to meet him again. I took the risk of entering Afghanistan in November 2001 when American warplanes were targeting Al Qaeda and Taliban from Jalalabad to Kabul.

I was lucky to meet him for the third time on the morning of November 8, 2001. I was the first and the last journalist to interview him after 9/11. Intense bombing was going on inside and outside the city of Kabul. He welcomed me with a smile on his face and said: “I told you last time that the enemy can kill me but they cannot capture me alive, I am still alive”. After the interview, he again said: “Mark my words, Hamid Mir, they can kill me anytime but they cannot capture me alive; they can claim victory only if they get me alive but if they will just capture my dead body, it will be a defeat, the war against Americans will not be over even after my death, I will fight till the last bullet in my gun, martyrdom is my biggest dream and my martyrdom will create more Osama bin Ladens”.

Osama fulfilled his promise. He never surrendered. US President Barack Obama finally announced the death of Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011. His death is the biggest news of 2011 for Americans but his sympathisers are satisfied that Osama bin Laden was not captured alive otherwise the Americans would have humiliated him like Saddam Hussain. For me, it was a great surprise that the world’s most wanted person was hiding in a Pakistani city, Abbotabad, home to Pakistan Military Academy (PMA). This is the same area where Pakistani intelligence agency ISI conducted a search operation to arrest Aby Faraj al Libbi in 2004 but the son-in-law of Osama escaped to Mardan where he was captured by ISI after few weeks.

It was learnt that the Americans conducted the operation without informing their Pakistani counterparts. Two American Chinook helicopters entered the Pakistani airspace from eastern Afghanistan. The government sources say: “We were unaware because the Americans jammed our radar system.” On the other hand, highly-placed responsible sources in the government confirmed that Pakistan shared very important information regarding Osama bin Laden in May 2010 with CIA. Pakistan security forces intercepted a phone call made by an Arab from the area between Taxila and Abbotabad. The CIA was informed in August 2010 about the possible presence of an important Al Qaeda leader in the area between Taxila and Abbotabad. Probably, this phone call was made by Osama bin Laden and that was a blunder. According to my knowledge, he escaped death at least four times after 9/11.At times, he dodged the world’s most sophisticated satellite systems and dangerous missiles by his own cleverness, and at others, it was his sheer luck that saved him from enemy strikes with only minutes to spare. The US air strikes started against the Taliban and Al Qaeda on October 7, 2001 and Osama bin Laden was spotted along with Dr.Ayman al Zawahiri on November 8, 2001 in Kabul. They had come to Kabul from Jalalabad to attend an al Qaeda meeting, and also to pay tribute to their Uzbek comrade, Jummah Khan Namangani, who lost his life in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, on November 6.

It was the same day that I was granted an interview by the world’s most wanted man in Kabul. I was not allowed to use my camera to take photographs of bin Laden. One of his sons, Abdul Rehman, took my picture with his father and with Dr. Ayman al Zawahri. Abdul Rehman used his own camera and gave me the film. Despite all these security measures, a female spy was able to notice the unusual movement of many important Arabs in Kabul.

I remember an incident that happened when I was having tea with bin Laden and Dr. Zawahiri after the interview. Bin Laden reminded me that this was the third interview I had with him. He informed me that I made some errors in translation of the article published after my first interview in 1997, but said he had found no evidence of any misrepresentation. He was hopeful, he said, that I would not misrepresent him in this interview. More than 20 al-Qaeda leaders were also present in the small room where they were taking tea. Conversation on that day proved that most of them were of the view that the US-backed Northern Alliance was moving close to Kabul due to the support of General Pervaiz Musharraf, who was providing air bases to the Americans in Pakistan.

Suddenly, an Arab al-Qaeda fighter entered the room and informed his leaders that they had arrested a woman in a blue burqa just a few meters from the place where we were meeting. She had been spying under the cover of posing as a beggar. She begged money — even from some al-Qaeda security guards posted outside of the place where I was interviewing bin Laden. But after a few minutes, one guard noticed that she seemed more interested in watching him than begging.

So the al-Qaeda fighter started observing her movements. He soon caught her red-handed when she was overheard talking to someone about “Sheikh” on a Thoraya satellite telephone. This news was broken to the meeting in Arabic, but I also understood the gist. Bin Laden immediately ordered one of his close associates that his “guest” must not be harmed. The associate, whose name was Muhammad, told me that he would be taking me to Jalalabad. In the ensuing rush, I said goodbye to Osama bin Laden and left with Muhammad in a private car. We were arrested by some Taliban guards outside Kabul because I was without a beard and I also had a camera in my possession, which had not been used in the interview. Muhammad never informed the Taliban that he was from al Qaeda. He told them instead that he worked for Interior Minister Mullah Abdul Raze Ached. The Taliban verified this information from the interior minister and released us after three hours.

It was late in the evening when we reached Jalalabad. Muhammad dropped me at a big house and disappeared. He came back after two hours with some startling news. He claimed that the place in Kabul where I met his “Sheikh” had been bombed just 15 minutes after our departure, but luckily “Sheikh” and others had left the place immediately after us and nobody was harmed. Muhammad told me: “Brother, you missed martyrdom with us”. I was unaware of the exact location of the earlier interview. Muhammad told me that it was in the Weir Akbar Khan area of Kabul.

I spent that night in Jalalabad, surviving intense US bombing on my right and left. Next morning, in Jalalabad Muhammad said goodbye to me and I left for Pakistan by road. We were to meet again in 2004 in Kunar when I was covering presidential elections in Afghanistan. It was then that he told me the whole story of how he and his “Sheikh” had survived the carpet-bombing of the US Air Force for many days running through the Tora Bora mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

It wasn’t until the third week of December 2001 when bin Laden and his fighters broke the circle created by Americans with the help of Haji Zahir, Haji Zaman and Hazrat Ali. The strategy of al Qaeda sometimes resembles that of the hunted in American western movies. A huge number of al Qaeda fighters entered into the Kurram tribal area of Pakistan from Tora Bora — but Osama bin Laden headed off in a different direction with a small group. Eyewitness Muhammad was also part of that group. Some Chechen and Saudi fighters provided them a cover of gunfire and they walked the whole night towards the safety of Paktia.

A top Afghan security official, Lutfullah Mashal, confirmed to me later that Osama bin Laden escaped to Paktia from Tora Bora in December 2001. Mashal followed him secretly. He claimed that Osama bin Laden entered North Wazirastan from Paktia. He spent some time there in Shawal area and then moved to the mountains of eastern Afghanistan in the province of Khost. Americans depended more on a Northern Alliance commander, Hazrat Ali — but this man betrayed them. According to highly reliable Afghan sources, Hazrat Ali provided safe passage to al-Qaeda after getting lots of money from them.

Osama bin Laden remained underground throughout the entire year of 2002. He and his colleagues were always on the run. They kept changing their hideouts again and again. They were determined to save their lives, and because of that, during this chapter they were not fighting.

It was in April of 2003 that the world’s most wanted man was to surface again in Afghanistan, after the US invasion of Iraq. He called a meeting in the Pech Valley of Kunar province and delivered a hard-hitting speech, in which he announced his plans to resist America in Iraq. He said: “Get Americans in Iraq before they get us in Afghanistan”. He declared that Saiful Adil would be in-charge of organising resistance in Iraq, and advised him to contact Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, who was hiding in Iran at the time. Bin Laden started addressing small gatherings of his comrades in Kunar as well as Paktia. One of his daughters-in-law died during childbirth in the Kunar mountains.

There was a big gathering at the funeral of his daughter-in-law. Local Afghans came to know about the death and started visiting the homes of some al-Qaeda fighters, who had married in Kunar. The news of these events reached the Americans. They launched an operation in Kunar, but once again Osama bin Laden escaped towards the south before the bombing started in Pech Valley.

It was late in 2004 when bin Laden found himself surrounded by British troops in the southern Afghan province of Helmand. Bin Laden had been hiding in a mountain area with three defence lines. Highly placed diplomatic sources revealed to this writer recently in Kabul that the British forces were very close to taking Osama bin Laden, dead or alive. He was besieged for more than 24 hours but he managed to dodge one of the world’s best equipped armies. According to details gathered from some Taliban sources in Helmand, the British forces broke two defence lines of al-Qaeda in an area of five kilometres.

One-to-one fighting was about to start, but as the day ended the darkness of night provided some welcome relief to al-Qaeda. Osama bin Laden wanted to fight on the frontline, but his colleagues stopped him. Heated arguments were exchanged. Bin Laden was angry, but Abu Hamza Al Jazeeri convinced him to escape. They placed many rockets with timers, aimed at two different directions, as a deception. They decided to break the enemy encirclement, heading in the third direction with a group of foot fighters. That group was providing cover to bin Laden. Most of the fighters lost their lives, but the plan succeeded.

Osama bin Laden slipped from the British hands along with Abu Hamza Al Jazeeri and some other fighters. These sources denied some reports that bin Laden had ordered his guards to shoot him if he was about to be arrested. The al-Qaeda sources claimed that he does not believe in suicide, it is easier for him to sacrifice his life in the battle against the enemy till the last bullet and the last drop of his blood. After that escape, he was very careful. He stopped moving inside Afghanistan and chose Pakistani tribal areas for an underground life. His big family was scattered after 9/11. Some of his children lived in Iran and one of his sons reportedly spent time in Karachi for a brief period but nobody thought that Osama would be captured in Abbottabad. He was hiding in Abbottabad with one of his wives, a son and a daughter. When Americans attacked his hideout, he immediately started fighting. His wife got bullet injury in her foot. According to his injured wife, Osama rushed to the rooftop and joined his guards who were resisting the attack. His 10-year-old daughter Safia watched American commandos entering the house, who took away the dead body of her father. She confirmed later: “The Americans dragged the dead body of my father through the stairs”.

Osama bin Laden is dead but al-Qaeda and its allies are not. Osama always exploited the flaws in American policies. His real strength was hatred against America; Islam was never his real strength. Physical elimination of Osama bin Laden is big news for the Americans but many outside America want elimination of the policies that produce bin Ladens. America came into Afghanistan in search of Osama bin Laden. No doubt that he was responsible for the killing of many innocent people but Americans cannot justify the killing of innocent people through drone attacks just because Osama killed some innocent Americans. Both Osama bin Laden and Americans violated the sovereignty of Pakistan. It must be stopped now. Osama is dead. If America does not leave Afghanistan after the death of Osama bin Laden, then this war will not end soon and the world will remain an unsafe place.

A Group of U.N.-appointed experts says Israeli forces violated International Law“including international Humanitarian and human rights law” during and after their raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May.

The U.N. Human Rights Council’s fact-finding mission says Israel’s naval blockade of the Palestinian territory was “unlawful” because a humanitarian crisis there at the time.

The three-member panel says Israel’s military response to the flotilla was “disproportionate” and “betrayed an unacceptable level of brutality.”

Eight Turkish activists and one Turkish-American were killed in the raid.

Israel says the soldiers acted in self-defense. The country’s mission to the U.N. in Geneva couldn’t immediately be reached for comment late Wednesday.

China’s main nuclear power company is in talks with Pakistan to build a one-gigawatt nuclear power Plant in the South Asian country, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The state-run China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC), which has already helped Pakistan build a civilian reactor at Chashma in Punjab province, is also finishing a second one there and has agreed contracts to build two others.

“Both sides are in discussions over the CNNC exporting a one-gigawatt nuclear plant to Pakistan,” company vice president Qiu Jiangang was quoted as saying by The Wall Street Journal.

Qiu added that the first reactor was running safely, and that the second would be onstream by year’s end.

Officials at CNNC had no immediate comment when contacted by a French News Agency.

The United States has conveyed its concerns to Pakistan over the contracts for the third and fourth reactors, saying such plans required special approval from the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

The group brings together nuclear energy states that forbid exports to nations lacking strict International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.

China joined the NSG in 2004. Pakistan has not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Americans are spending more time consuming news than a decade ago, adding online news to a diet of traditional media such as print newspapers, radio and television , according to a new survey.

The survey by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that Americans spend an average of 57 minutes a day getting news from print newspapers, radio and television, the same amount of time as in 2000.

“But today, they also spend an additional 13 minutes getting news online , increasing the total time spent with the news to 70 minutes,” Pew said.

“In short, instead of replacing traditional news platforms, Americans are increasingly integrating new technologies into their news consumption habits,” Pew said.

Pew said the news consumption totals did not include Americans who get news on cellphones so the likely average amount of time exceeds 70 minutes.

Pew said 83 percent of Americans get news in one form or another on a daily basis while 17 percent reported consuming no news at all.

Thirty-six percent of the 3,006 adults surveyed by Pew said they got news from digital and traditional sources the previous day while 39 percent said they relied solely on traditional sources.

Only nine percent of those surveyed said they got news through the Internet or mobile devices without also using traditional sources.

Twenty-six percent of those surveyed said they read a print newspaper the previous day, down from 30 percent two years ago and 38 percent in 2006.

Online newspaper readership is growing, the survey found, with 17 percent of Americans saying they visited a newspaper website the previous day, up from 13 percent in 2008 and nine percent in 2006.

The survey also found that more Americans are using Internet Search Engines to track down news on topics of interest. Thirty-three percent said they regularly use search engines to find news, up from 19 percent in 2008.

Thirty-one percent of those surveyed said they access the Web with their mobile phone but just eight percent said they regularly use the device to get news.

The survey was conducted between June 8 and June 28 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Web search speed used to be gauged by how many mouse they took. Google just took the click out of the equation.

Thanks to a set of enhancements to its Internet search engine released on Wednesday (and propagating out to the entire net over the next few days), the new Google search engine will predict your query as you type and deliver results simultaneously — no more clicking for results.

The company claims its Google Instant technology will shave two to five seconads off every web search.

“Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes , but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page,” the company explained. By presenting results as you enter your search, “you can scan a results page while you type.”

But there may be a downside to the enhanced speed. According to Adam Bunn, head of search at independent search and social marketing agency Greenlight, some websites may suffer a drop in traffic thanks to the changes.

Many sites buy advertising space based on long multi-word keywords, he explained, and as people see results that may be appropriate before they finish typing such keywords, those ad dollars may be wasted — and traffic may suffer.

“If a website has optimized for and holds good rankings for ‘cheap Car insurance UK ,’ that term may lose search traffic as UK users find that the shorter ‘cheap car insurance’ returns several relevant looking results, negating the need to finish their sentence,” Bunn said.

On the other hand, should less common topics should see even fewer page visits, the cost of buying ads that target those pages may drop, he pointed out.

Google is the world’s No.1 search engine, but is facing increased competition from Microsoft Corp’s Bing search engine.

New technologies, such as the specialized applications that run on Apple’s iPhones and fast-growing social-networking services such as Facebook, are also threatening to undermine Google’s position as the main gateway to online information, according to analysts.

Google shares are down roughly 26 percent from their 52-week high of $629.51.

Google said the technology will also be available in many more countries in several weeks.

SAN FRANCISCO: Google and Verizon have introduced a proposal for howInternet service should be regulated — and were immediately criticized by groups that favor keeping the network as open as possible.

According to the proposal, Internet service providers would not be able to block producers of online contentor offer them a paid “fast lane.” It says the Federal Communications Commission should have the authority to stop or fine any rule-breakers.

The proposal, however, carves out exceptions for Internet access over cellphone networks, and for potential new services that broadband providers could offer. In a joint blog post, the companies said these could include things like health care monitoring, “advanced educational services, or new entertainment and gaming options.”

The two companies are hoping to influence regulators and lawmakers in the debate over a principle known as net neutrality, which holds that Internet users should have equal access to all types of information online.

This principle is crucial for consumers and for fostering innovation amongInternet entrepreneurs, Eric E Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, said in a call with reporters. “The next two people in a garage really do need an open Internet,” he said.

But some proponents of net neutrality say that by excluding wireless and other online services, Google and Verizon are creating a loophole that could allow carriers to circumvent regulation meant to ensure openness.

The plan “creates an Internet for the haves and an Internet for the have-nots,” said Andrew Jay Schwartzman, senior vice president and policy director at the Media Access Project, an advocacy group in Washington and a member, along with Google, of the Open Internet Coalition. “It may make some services unaffordable for consumers and access to those services unavailable to new start-ups.”

Ivan Seidenberg, chief executive of Verizon, said the proposal excluded cellphone networks because the companies were “concerned about the imposition of too many rules” that could slow the growth of the wireless Web.

The proposal also excludes services that broadband providers may create. These services, the companies said, would have to be “distinguishable from traditionalbroadband Internet access services and are not designed to circumvent the rules.”

Mobile phones are writhing bug factories that can harbour 18 times more bacteriathan a flush handle in a men’s toilet, a new study shows.

With iPhone 4 fever about to hit Melbourne, a researcher who swabbed 30 mobiles found at least seven had unacceptably high levels of bacteria.

The results point to potentially poor hygiene among millions of mobile phone users that could result in stomach upsets, or worse.

“The levels of potentially harmful bacteria on one mobile were off the scale,” said UK hygiene expert Jim Francis.

“That phone needs sterilising.”

The microscopic nasties ranged from enterobacteria, a group of bacteria that includes bugs such as salmonella, to food poisoning bugs e.coli andstaphylococcus aureus.

Even if a phone owner is scrupulously clean, beating the bacteria may not be so simple.

Handing your phone to others so they can view holiday snaps or marvel at a coolnew iPhone app is an invitation for bugs to get on board.

Researcher Ceri Stanaway said most phones in the study didn’t have any bacteriathat would make users sick straight away, but they were grubbier than they need be.

“The bugs can end up on your hands, which is a breeding ground and be passed back to your phone,” she said.

“They can be transferred back and forth and eventually you could catch something nasty.”

Researchers said the study showed how easy it was to come into contact withbacteria.

“People see toilet flushes as being something dirty to touch but they have lessbacteria than phones,” Ms Stanaway said.

The 42-year-old received the festival’s Donostia Award from Spanish actor Javier Bardem, her co-star in her latest movie “Eat Pray Love”, who called her an “extraordinary” and “versatile” actress.

“She touches all genres without any effort. She has the capacity to transmit all types of emotions,” he said.

A video shown of highlights from Roberts’ career included scenes from her breakout role as a high-class prostitute in “Pretty Woman” 20 years ago and her turn as an environmental crusader in “Erin Brockovich” for which she won theAcademy Award in 2001 for Best Actress.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she said. “I watch all that and I just think what a lucky girl, what a very fortunate woman I have been in my life for such a variety of reasons.”

Australia paid more than two million dollars (1.87 million US) to tempt US megastar Oprah Winfrey Down Under in a bid to raise the country’s profile as aholiday destination.

Winfrey told an ecstatic American studio audience they would be flown to Australia by Hollywood star John Travolta for a tourist dash which would take in beaches, vineyards, Sydney Harbour and the world-famous Great Barrier Reef.

“We’ll sail Sydney Harbour, some will sample shiraz in Aussie wine country and others will shop ’til they drop in trendy Melbourne,” the chat show queen told her 300-strong audience.

“We’ll get up close with kangaroos and koalas, kick back on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and experience one of the seven wonders of the world — the Great Barrier Reef.”

Several episodes of the popular talk show will be shot during the eight-day adventure, culminating in a recording session which will see one of Sydney’s most famous icons become the “Oprah House”.

The December trip has been almost a year in the planning and Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson said it had received 2.5 million dollars (2.3 million US) in government funding.

Ferguson Tuesday said the trip by Winfrey’s show, which screens in 145 countries and is now shooting its 25th and final season, would showcase Australia to the world and act as a drawcard for visitors.

“The decision of The Oprah Winfrey Show to actually come to Australia is a major coup,” Ferguson told ABC radio.

“In announcing it in the US overnight, she described it as her ‘dream destination’ and that means we are going to get a major international opportunity to lift Australia’s profile as a premier tourism destination.

“This represents a huge international audience,” he added.

Travolta will fly the group on a Qantas jet, and the flagship national airline said it was proud to be involved in the massive exercise.

“We look forward to flying the Oprah show correspondents and over 300 of Oprah’s most loyal viewers to Australia on our fleet,” chief executive Alan Joyce said.

Winfrey, 56, was ranked the world’s most powerful celebrity by Forbes magazine this year, outclassing actress Angelina Jolie and singer Beyonce Knowles.

She is due to launch her own television channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network, in 2011.

NASA Kepler Space Telescope

To boldly go where no man has gone before- but could potentially- NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope launched in March is tasked with searching habitable Earth-like planets in distant star systems. Using a photometer that’s more than three feet in diameter, Kepler is now continuously observing some 100,000 stars located between 600 and 3,000 light-years away. Scientists hope that Kepler could find dozens of habitable planets during its three-to-four-year mission.

The Electric Eye

MIT researchers are developing a microchip that will enable a blind person to recognize faces and navigate a room without assistance, helping the blind to regain partial eyesight. The chip, which is encased in titanium to prevent water damage, will be implanted onto a patient’s eyeball. Users are required to wear special glasses fitted with a small camera that transmits images to the titanium-encased chip, which fires an electrode array under the retina that stimulates the optic nerve. The glasses will help to power the coils surrounding the eyeball.

TST: What is the concept of change for you and

how do you see youth revamping the whole system?

IK: Change is the only inevitable constant in life.

Crisis heralds change. The system has already col-

lapsed in face of a calamity. The survival instinct and

hence the whole thread of our society is threatened

and the urgency to revamp the system should be the

pulsating order of the day. Steps taken in the right

direction by youth, channelizing and utilizing their

energies to the fullest for a constructive change is the

need of the hour.

TST: Is democracy suitable for Pakistan?

IK: Democracy in letter and spirit denotes account-

ability and transparency. Pakistan’s biggest predica-

ment is only and solely corruption. Today, in times of

dire need, both funds and donations are being held

back by the local and international donors because

they have lost faith in this demented system. People

are not paying taxes due to corruption and the tax-

payer’s money is not fed to the Exchequer again due

to the corruption which reek of nepotism. Our govern-

ment is borrowing money from right, left and centre,

tarnishing the repute and credibility of our country.

In abstract what you see is a self-centered establish-

ment flirting with stagnancy and on the verge of its

self contrived destruction and demise. Dictators did

more damage than anyone else to the country. Look

how heavily we are paying for the war that General

Musharraf took us into. Democracy remains the only

workable solution; we just have to do away with cor-

rupt leadership.

TST: Who do you hold responsible for Pakistan’s

corruption?

IK: The collective political mafia. They’re in politics

for one reason - it’s the biggest business. It’s analogous

to a loot and plunder of its own kind minus the deter-

rent: accountability. Just take a look at Nawaz Sharif

and Asif Zardari and their mammoth sized properties,

businesses and bank balances.

TST:We understand the pertinence of the solution

provided by PTI but don’t you think the general public

will not understand the importance of a free election

commission, a free judiciary or a free state until and

unless they’re fed to their full?

IK: A hungry man is an angry man- true. Pakistan’s

general public craves justice, partiality, economic se-

curity, social freedom and religious homogeneity. The

country is almost bankrupt with soaring corruption.

There is no concept of social welfare, development

and relief projects for the common man. PTI vows to

put an end to unjust and corrupt practices, give com-

mon man his well deserved right and ensure equality

of opportunity on all fronts.

TST:How can people reconcile best with PTI and

how do they trust it to be different from other parties?

IK: Well just like people know it for a fact that

Shaukat Khanum is not only different but also way

better than any other hospital in the country, similarly

they have learnt to trust PTI as a vocal and credible

political party, a prototype for social justice. Here

too at PTI is an organizational infrastructure, rule of

law, a functional, synchronized system with a strong

manifesto. The only gauge to go by is my history, my

past experience and my well earned credentials on

basis of my work only over the years and the unrelent-

ing spirit which I carry to PTI.

TST: Can philanthropy help youth climbing the

rungs of political know-how?

IK: Philanthropic streak can and does wonders for

collective good when synchronized with a clear politi-

cal vision.

TST: How do you see students’ politicization mate-

rializing?

IK: Students have to simply join political parties.

Political Party is the only viable and effective instru-

ment of change. It is only a utopia that coming out

on streets as a hysterical mob or forming an NGO

for social welfare heralds change. Change is always

political in nature and it is political governance alone

that brings change.

TST: Students are penalized for joining political

parties so how can they actively participate in youth

wings of political parties?

IK: Students don’t necessarily have to join political

party wings on campus. I propose they join political

parties’ forum outside the premises of their respective

institutions just like clocking a few hours in any co

curricular activity in creating mass awareness, eman-

cipation and empowerment. Youth politicization is the

panacea of all ills.

TST: Are we witnessing state failure?

IK: The state is crumbling because there is an in-

stitutional collapse. No organization is delivering as

corruption is at its peak. Justice is denied, rule of law

is slithering, corruption is rampant; hence a stage has

come when chaos has taken over and we are head-

ing towards anarchy. State’s non existent efforts amidst

this great disaster have culminated in mass suffering

and colossal loss.

TST: Speaking of revolution, when in power, do

you plan to modify the constitution or introduce a

new one?

IK: Pakistan, the land of pure is endowed with skil-

ful and gifted youth bursting with talent. We just have

to do away with the corrupt leadership and purge our

institutions with effective checks and balances en-

joined by the constitution. We don’t have to jump to

a new constitution altogether, the present one needs

riddance of the perverted adulteration military and

vested interest political parties had brought in. A con-

stitution granting prevalence of rule of law, writ of the

state and balance of power among the three state pil

lars is what is needed.

TST: How does the “emergency in education” no-

tion plan to address the problem that faces our nation,

i.e. of losing our young assets?

IK: One system of Education is the need of the hour

to bring solidarity to the nation so that there is no

internal conflict and no one gets left out in this race

for THE BEST. Equality of Opportunity in job alloca-

tion and education is the cornerstone of PTI’s mani-

festo. With pay structure revised, selection criterion

standardized and appointments based on merit, the

educated youth will prefer to settle down here, work

to their potential and raise their standard of living too.

TST: What fruits will student politicization bear in

such times of dire mass awakening to avert the suffer-

ing of disaster struck brethren?

IK: Politicized students will be a momentous force

in itself and will have a say regarding the shortcom-

ings of the indifferent leaders; thus be the instruments

of change. Allah ordains us to protest against the bru-

tality exercised in a society and curb it with strong

faith lest He unleashes destruction on the society.

Youth rising up to meet the challenges and uniting

to nip the evil in the bud will save us all from such

impending disasters.

TST: We speak half Urdu, half English- neither flu-

ently- we embrace the norms of the West and feel

ashamed embracing our own. How do you view this

identity crisis that faces our youth? Also suggest this

bridge be reconciled and homogeneity in our culture

and language be restored?

IK: Sadly this heterogeneity is attributable to the

unchecked permeation of three different levels of edu-

cation being imparted in our country. The three be-

ing: the Elite Private Schooling, the substandard Public

Institutions and the oft targeted madarassa education.

We have to revolutionize this trichotomous system

and arrive at a standard, homogenous and multi fac-

eted curriculum at par with international standards of

Education to bring about conformity in thought, action

and politicization of the youth.

TST: There are suicide attacks, bombings, insuffi-

cient relief for natural disasters coupled with an indif-

ferent government filling up its pockets, a failed state,

a pitiful economy and a suppressed public in an iden-

tity crisis. What’s your take on those and also if you

think there is anyone to blame?

IK: We’ve suffered a lot more casualties than the

dead US marines in Iraq and Afghanistan; our GHQ

has been attacked, our ISI people have been targeted

many times, we’ve endured 500 bomb blasts in the

last 9 years, an average of one suicide attack in 24

hours this last year killing our senior policemen. Our

economy is in shambles as our $50M has gone down

the drain in this concocted and misdirected so-called

war on terror. This alone has caused mass social dis-

satisfaction, escalation in corruption as leaders are

busy filling up their pockets leaving thousands dead

in drone attacks, millions stranded in face of a natural

calamity and the entire nation placed under a heavy

debt and international disgrace.

TST: You’ve been accused to have voted for Fazl ur

Rehman, the alleged mentor of Taliban, in the 2002

elections. How would you defend this accusation?

IK: Coalition with any party is not on PTI’s agenda

so I did not intentionally side with anyone. I’ve boldly

aired my grievances about this futile war on terror

as we don’t need to wage anyone else’s war. I was

the first in the parliament six years ago to have re-

sented sending military to Waziristan. My vehement

opposition to militarization earned me the title of pro

Taliban. I had rightly proposed peaceful negotiations

to bring contentious issues to the table and amicably

resolve the Taliban imbroglio. Not only have we had

disastrous economic repercussions but also incurred

an irreparable social disintegration. We have to talk

to these Taliban as they are not ideological Taliban

but are reactionary Taliban stemming from military

operations.

TST: Did US rear these reactionary Talibans and

how to assuage these tribal turned rebels?

IK: America’s $120B on this worthless wild goose

chase has only produced reactionary Talibans. We

must enforce a cease fire which will automatically

bring down this Jehadi movement post America’s pull

out and will allay such gruesome suicide attacks.

TST: Do we need America’s help to set it all right?

IK: America’s peanuts have done more harm than

good. So called US aid has resulted in common mis-

trust, cataclysmic law and order situation, flight of

capital, inflation and unemployment.

TST: What would be your economic recipe to mainstream

the masses that are well below the poverty line?

IK: The New Great Game is at its peak and whatever the cost be,

we have to explore, utilize and channelize our untapped natural

resources and harness nature fully to fuel and set in motion our rust-

ing economic machinery. Foreign exchange reserves will go up

once we harvest, process and produce goods from

our various cash crops. We just have to have the will

to break free from aid bondage and ensure a secure

welfare state to curb the internal anarchy.

TST: Why we are still stranded in this socio-eco-

nomic rigmarole even a year after independence of

judiciary?

IK: Government is not letting judiciary function.

Prosecution lies with the government; 18th amend-

ment is tying judiciary’s hands. People have to take

to the streets yet again and raise their voices against

government’s injustice and cruelty.

TST: How do you weigh your chances in upcoming

election and what will be your agenda?

IK: I can guarantee PTI’s clean sweeping the up-

coming elections and bring a revolution greater than

that in 1970 as it is a party of the youth and youth

comprise 70% of Pakistan’s population. We’ve ap-

proached the Supreme Court to enroll and revise the

electoral lists of 1997 as we want a biometric system,

an independent and impartial Election Commission

and an election to be contested on NADRA issued

CNICs. So the 4 million voters above 18 years coming

up every year since 1997 be appropriately listed and

be allowed to have a say in selecting and electing in

an unprejudiced democratic set up.

TST: Coalitions being celebrated, would you hold

your fort or succumb to the prevalent political forces?

IK: Not in a mood of forming one. MQM is not

important anymore. Sharif brothers are (laughingly).

TST: How grim are the ground realities in the flood

affected areas and how do you plan recompense for

the stranded people when the state has shied away

from its responsibilities?

IK: It’s been really depressing to see 20M people

impoverished by these devastating floods which have

inundated one fifth of our country. Devastation still

remains to be assessed and addressed. Subsistence

farmers have lost their livelihood as cash crops lay

ruined. Government doesn’t have a plan to deal with

it. It’s heartening to see people fighting for the relief

goods. Our President was busy touring on a personal

visit- attended his son’s coronation, visited his cha-

teau- proclaiming that he had been gone to collect

money which is the lowest collected in any disaster

so far. Government’s nonchalant attitude in rescuing

these disaster-struck victims is disgraceful. No money

is being channelized by the government and the mi-

niscule of government relief camps are without food

items and basic health cover. Pakistan could implode,

devolve into chaos as 20M people are in dire straits

that need immediate relief and rehabilitation and help

is welcome from all sides.

TST: Is it all doom and gloom in Pakistan?

IK: Not at all, I’m a great optimist; I have great faith

in the Pakistani people who will Insha Allah bring a

remarkable change. All that is left is for the infinite

potential to realize its actuality.
